One will soon understand why The Sound of Distant Thunder won the 1999 Book of the Year Award of the Appalachian Writers Association. It's an honest book about folks who live in the hills and coves of Western North Carolina. Sharyn McCrumb's books tell about the mountains in a fair and straightforward way, and so does this book. You will find The Sound of Distant Thunder an excellent read.

This is the story of revenge, mountain style. It is nota mystery in the truest sense of the word and it is not a love story, but it has elements of both. The rugged and individualistic people ofthe Blue Ridge mountains will wait patiently for the courts to meteout justice, but if that justice is too slow in coming, or if justiceshould miscarry because of slick lawyers and poor laws, then a vaccumis created--in time, every vacuum must be filled.Be forewarned: Thisis not Snuffy Smith or Li'l Abner."The Sound of distantThunder" is the winner of the 1999 Book of the Year award of theAppalachian Writers Association, an award won in the past by suchwriters as Sharyn McCrumb, Charles Frazier and, this year, by RobertMorgan.
