Evening's Empire: A Novel Review

Evening's Empire: A Novel

This is an intelligent and "important" novel that chronicles the life and times of rock music from the 1960s to the present through the amazing experiences of a band manager and, especially, through the superb mind and writing ability of Bill Flanagan. (Congrats to you, Mr. Flanagan!)
If you want a sweeping epic, filled with drugs, sex, rock and roll -- and incredible story-telling -- laced with what certainly sounds like professional insight, then this will be a page-turning delight. The characters seem genuine, their motivations, actions, and reactions believable, the plot moves along rapidly, and you just want it all to continue.
Once in a while I read what I feel is truly a great book -- this one makes my short list. I think you'll feel lucky to have read it.

Life and Life Only Review

Life and Life Only
Average Reviews:

"life and life only" is about just that...
about life... it's disappointments, it's challenges, it's rewards
"shoeless joe", "bang the drum slowly" and "man on spikes" are three of the best in the category
this book merits inclusion with these big three
the author follows the life of a gifted child athlete into his 50's and incorporates what was happening in the country at each stage on his lifeline
it also incorporates the protaganist's love of the art of bob dylan and how his life is enriched and affected by music in general and dylan specifically... this is a new and welcome hook to the genre
if you like either baseball, music or stories about the persistence of a good and principled man in the face of the daily challenges of living then this book is for you... if you like all three then this is a home run

When fortune steps in and Dan gets a second chance at life, a strange confluence of events presents him with the opportunity to pay forward the favor bestowed on him by a person he never even knew; that is if he can find the pluck to pull it off.

Never Mind the Pollacks: A Rock and Roll Novel (P.S.) Review

Never Mind the Pollacks: A Rock and Roll Novel (P.S.)

Never Mind the Pollacks by Neal Pollack is alternately brilliant and trash, and if you are at all into the history of rock music, Thompsonian mania, sex, drugs, puking on shoes, f**king the establishment, riding the snake to the lake, and flipping birds or wearing sunglasses in every photograph ever taken of you, definitely read this book.
At the very least it's good for some seriously hard laughs, and even when he fails at what he's doing, it's like seeing your favorite band play a bad show--you still get the gist of what he was going for, and as is true with rock-and-roll in general, you just can't be on all the time.
Now, i'm going to go puke up 8 martinis and pass out cold.
Note: I am no relation to Mr Pollack. My surname has two O's.
